Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – Decarbonisation & Energy Solutions (Manchester)

Role Overview

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer responsible for delivering high-quality mechanical building services designs across decarbonisation and sustainable retrofit projects. Covers full lifecycle delivery from feasibility through to construction and commissioning, with a strong focus on low-carbon technologies.


Core Experience Required

Mechanical Design & Low Carbon Systems

  • Strong background in mechanical building services design
  • Proven delivery of low-carbon / decarbonisation projects
  • Experience with:
    • Heat pumps (incl. hybrid & low-temp systems)
    • Heat recovery systems
    • High-efficiency HVAC design
    • Thermal storage solutions
    • Demand-led / smart building controls
  • Ability to integrate mechanical + electrical systems in retrofit and new-build environments
  • Understanding of electrical building services coordination

Technical Delivery

  • Full RIBA Stages 2–5 experience
  • Capable of:
    • Heat load calculations
    • Equipment selection and sizing
    • Ductwork & pipework design
    • Schematics, schedules, and technical reports
    • DSEAR assessments
  • Experience with:
    • Heat networks (feasibility through to connection design)
    • Energy modelling & simulation tools (e.g. IES, EnergyPro)
  • Competent in:
    • AutoCAD
    • BIM workflows (Revit desirable)

Compliance & Quality

  • Strong understanding of:
    • CIBSE Guides
    • BS EN Standards
    • UK Building Regs (Part L, F, G)
  • Ability to check, QA, and sign off mechanical designs
  • Experience contributing to HAZOP / LOPA reviews

Project & Leadership Capability

  • Lead mechanical design packages on multidisciplinary projects
  • Client-facing – confident in meetings and technical presentations
  • Experience across:
    • Design & Build
    • Traditional procurement routes
  • Strong organisational skills managing multiple projects
  • Able to mentor junior engineers
  • Commercial awareness (bids, scopes, fee proposals)
  • Risk identification and mitigation (risk registers)

Sector Experience (Desirable)

  • Decarbonisation / retrofit programmes
  • Public sector projects
  • Funding-led schemes such as:
    • PSDS
    • WH/SHDF

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering (BEng or equivalent)
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards
  • Strong practical experience in mechanical building services design and delivery
